Took Mac ferreting for the 1st time today and he caught his 1st Rabbit. 1st hole of the day too ! Netted a few holes and left a couple open. I stood by with the shotgun in case they made it passed the fence. Dropped the ferret (Dirk) in and sat back and waited for him to do his stuff. After what seemed like and eternity, we heard a right commotion, a rabbit came squealing to the mouth of the hole. This immediately got the dogs attention. The rabbit almost got out of the hole, only for Dirk to drag it back in again. After only another minute, it came running out again, managed to escape the jaws of Dirk. Mac was on it's trail in an instant. The rabbit headed straight for the fence line, directly away from me, so the dog was in my line of fire. The deerhound caught up and ran with it with his head down , unsure as to when to strike. They were very close to the fence line now and just as I thought it would be another "one that got away", the rabbit paused briefly to pick it's escape route through the wire fence. Mac saw his chance and scooped him up in his large, powerful jaws. I called him back, resisting the overwhelming desire to run over to him and give him a big hug. He brought it back to hand, and with a little persuasion gave it up. Big day, big deal, big grins !
