He is almost 11 months old now. The raccoon in the second pic was almost twice as big as him, he was about 9 months old in that picture. I let him have a go at it by himself but he couldn't handle it and was in some trouble so I got the coon off him. No damage to the dog and he was not affected by the encounter, in fact he was looking for it and I brought it him to the tree where it had climbed up. We had to get rid of the coon as it was damaging crops so I brought my male Bourbonnais out, Beau is the one in the picture with the pup. He went to the tree and smelled the ladder that the raccoon used to get up and proceeded to climb halfway up. I thought ok lets see if we could get the raccoon down to finish it. I started up the ladder and Beau climbed right to the top and placed his front paws on the branch where the coon was perched. I didn't think it threw too well as the wasn't a dog on the ground capable of holding the raccoon if it bailed out. Everything was ok as the coon didn't want to leave the safety of the end of the branch. I carried the dog down, he was ok going up but I didn't want too push it by expecting him to make it down on his first attempt especially when he was pumped up. The raccoon eventually was brought to the ground and then it was on! It tried to make a dash for freedom but was denied as Beau and Snoopy blocked the attempt. It did get in it's licks as Beau had the raccoon hanging from his neck but once it was loose he had him. If you look at his head in the pic you can see it is pretty solid and he has a good bite when he wants. One day when we took the kids to the park he bit in one bite, not chewed, through a single ply nylon lead because he didn't appreciate not being able to play with the kids like he did at home. Once the raccoon didn't seem to be too much to handle for Snoopy I called Beau off and let the little guy build up his confidence by finishing the coon. It weighed somewhere between 20-25 lbs and Snoopy is about 12-13, big difference in size. I have video of the terrier on small coon by himself but don't know if I can post it or not.
Here is another that was the same kind of scenario, softened up a bit before the pup was on it, when he was about 7 months.
