Took the pup out over the fields this afternoon, he's doing really well for 10 weeks. He's keen on recall, has retrived to hand since the first time I threw his chew toy, he sits when told and we're just starting to work on stay. Anyway, so were walking along a muddy track, just coming out of a small hurst with the setting sun at our backs, when I spotted four Roe deer making their way out of the tree line some 100 yards to my left.
I stopped dead and crouched down, calling Chase to my side... and then sat and watched them making their way across the field. Once they had disapeared around a bend in the hedge some 50 yards ahead of us, we got up and continued along the hedge row in the same direction as the deer had gone. As we rounded the bend ourselves, the sun still at our backs, I was astonished to see that the deer where within a stones throw of us, heads down, grazing at the foot of the hedge.
It wasn't long before the white plume of fluff spread out across one of their backsides and all their heads went up. We just stood there looking at one another for a few moments before a couple of them simply went back to grazing, whilst the other two turned away from us and started walking away.
Not knowing wether to slink back the way we came, or pass through the hedge, I decided to just carry on at a slow stoll to see just how close we could get before they took flight.ph34r.gif
The deer weren't up for letting me sneak up on them like that though! They just legged it as soon as we started to aproach them. They high tailed it about 150 yards up the field and then stopped again. We kept walking, but they were well onto us by this point and didn't let us get back within any less than 100 yards before they'd move a little further across the field. Considering that we weren't expecting to come across even so much as a rabbit, I think we were very fortunate to get so close to these deer without intending on it.
And what did Chase think about our little encounter... NOTHING! He just stayed by my ankles, looking at me from time to time with a bored expression that kinda said "Come on dad, I want to get home for my dinner..." laugh.gif
I just hope he shows a bit more interest in a few years time!
